Our Home Economics Department has 3 new spacious kitchens, 2 on the first floor, and a wheelchair-accessible one on the ground floor.
The kitchens have a generous amount of bench space and are designed to hold up to 30 students at a time. Each has a ceiling-mounted demonstration mirror, to allow students a clear view of every step when the teacher takes them through a new recipe.
The kitchens are very well equipped, with all the cooking utensils and appliances needed to build a solid foundation of cooking skills. Just some of the different types of equipment are:
- Kitchen Aids
- griddles
- food processors
- sauté pans
- egg beaters
- cutters for specially shaped pastries
- sushi mats
- crepe pans
- cake decorating kits
- professional catering uniforms
The upper two kitchens are set out much like a home kitchen, allowing students to build proficiency in the vital life skill of preparing tasty and nutritious food. The lower kitchen is the catering kitchen, where students gain experience in preparing and serving food in a commercial setting. It opens onto the dining room and outdoor cafe, where a number of functions are held each year. It is also where the barista courses are held several times a year.
