Reimaging the story of Peter Pan was this year's twist on delivering a musical production that promises to surprise and delight at Beaudesert State High – 'The Lost'.
The freedom of writing a musical from a blank piece of paper has given the production team and Director Courtney De Leon complete creative control of the script without the limits existing copyright enforces. It also gave students the opportunity to develop their own creative skills offstage as well as on. This forms a core component of the school curriculum and delivers on freedom of self-expression.
In developing the plot, Peter Pan was researched with a discussion on what would the story look like if instead of Hook being the villain… it was Peter Pan! This led to the an entirely new character 'Ripley' and a story line that will not be 'lost' on the audience!
Rehearsals began in Term 2 and continue through term 3 providing numerous learning opportunities.
Students are gaining valuable life skills including patience – sometimes as all professional artists discover, you can wait an entire rehearsal to perform in just one scene.
The ability to let go of creative control and see your idea taking shape through the eyes and performances of others was another important skill gained.
And confidence – confidence in talking and working closely with people you don't necessarily know, learning what it is to be vulnerable and a belief in yourself and the team you are part of.
